Jummah Treats

Happy Friday y’all!

Friday is an overall happy day for everyone, regardless of your background. It’s the end of the week, weekend plans dominate your mind, and generally speaking the whole world is in a happier mood. But if you’re Muslim, Friday just got even sweeter. And here’s a quick historical and religious background on why:

Friday is a regarded as a very auspicious and important day for Muslims – and that tone was set through various revelations in our holy book, The Quran. Here’s one such excerpt:

“O you who believe! When the call to prayer is proclaimed on Jummah (Friday) hasten earnestly to the remembrance of God, and leave aside business.  That is best for you if you but knew.” (Quran 62:9)

It is the one day of the week that Muslims come together to pray in congregation and strengthen their devotion as a community. Before the prayer, they listen to a short lecture to empower and educate them with valuable knowledge about God and the tenets of Islam. In Muslim countries, businesses actually shut down or delay opening so that people may attend the Friday prayer without any distraction. I’m telling you, Friday is a big deal. Like, we really do TGIF (haha). In case you needed some more reasoning, Friday is also the day that we believe the first human, Prophet Adam, was created. So folks, humanity came to be on this day…sounds like a pretty awesome day to celebrate and appreciate to me.

I could go on and on, but y’all get the point. Anyway, I wanted to impart that special feeling and love for Fridays in my kids too, so I started a mini-tradition with Aiza, which Rania has also come to love and I’m hoping Zahra will cherish too. We call it, JummahTreats.

Every Friday, after school, once the girls have offered their afternoon prayer, we get to enjoy a special treat. It’s pretty much as simple as that. My girl squad generally prefers sprinkle donuts, sprinkle mini cupcakes, sprinkle cookies, or… wait for it… ice cream with M&Ms and, of course, SPRINKLES. (Are you sensing a theme here?) We are hardcore Marble Slab-bers by the way, so ice cream has to always come with two mix-ins. 🙂 Anyway, I try to spice up the treats every now and then with things outside the realm of baked or sugary goodies. One Friday I got them their first fidget spinners, and boy was that a surprise but a hit! Another Friday, I took them to a place called iPlay SugarLand – basically an indoor play place for tots. They loved that one too…and it is highly requested every Friday…LOL.

Today I’m really excited because I scored a great find at Target. Since the girls have done such an excellent job of getting back into the routine of school, have actually been finishing their packed lunches this week, and because I just love spoiling them – I got them sprinkle sugar cookies AND Trolls themed lip balm. They just discovered the movie Trolls on the airplane and have been OBSESSED with it. They even wore their hair like Princess Poppy to school today. So yeah, this lip balm, it’s pretty much the shizz right now. Can’t wait to see their reactions today! So the Supermom Award for Best Jummah Treats most definitely goes to….

Yours Truly.

Have a great weekend!
